Cesca Janece Waterfield grew up along the shore of Virginia’s Rappahannock River and in the Wiregrass Region of Alabama. She learned to write songs by forming guitar chords and memorizing scales, studying song structures and lyrics of the greats, and by willingly submitting to trials honored by Christian myth and country music: the twin rails of transgression and deliverance. After graduating from Old Dominion University, she skipped grad school in San Marcos, Texas in favor of life lived through woozy mornings borne tentatively. Mostly she went looking for trouble she believed she could flirt with, fall into and observe, and then atone for in song. After working several years as a freelance and staff journalist and editor, she graduated from McNeese State University with an MFA in Creative Writing. Cesca once played Scruggs-style banjo breakdowns with comic Kevin Nealon, and met Willie Nelson in a restaurant named ‘Cesca. Her work has appeared in Scalawag, Writers Resist, Deep South , and others. She received the 2017 Editor’s Prize in Fiction from MARY: A Journal of New Writing , judged by Natalie Baszile. Her chapbook CONSPIRACY CHERRY is forthcoming from Ludic Arts Press.
