Jeff Fearnside is author of the short-story collection Making Love While Levitating Three Feet in the Air, and Other Stories of Flight (Stephen F. Austin State University Press, 2016), which was a finalist for the New Rivers Press MVP Award and the Permafrost Book Prize in Fiction. Set in the contrasting American Midwest and West and linked thematically by the recurring idea of flight in its various definitions and senses, it has been called “rich in so many ways: in its deep explorations of diverse lives and experiences; in its immersion in place, which often becomes a character itself…” (Small Press Picks).
Fearnside’s writing has long focused on nature and place. He has visited more than 40 U.S. states, bicycled with a companion across England and Wales, later cycled solo nearly 1,100 miles around Scotland, and traveled along the Silk Road from Turkey to China. He lived in Central Asia for four years, first as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer and then as manager of a fellowship program in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan that sends professionals from former Soviet states in Eurasia to study at the graduate level in the United States.
