Pattie Palmer-Baker has always loved words, so much so she evolved a style which combines her poetry in calligraphic form with collages of paste paper. Paste paper is a decorated paper technique in which the artist paints a mixture of color and artist-made paste on wet paper. Before the paint/paste dries, the artist quickly uses texture-making tools to create designs or images on the surface. Once dried, the paper is cut into the shapes and images that will give meaning to the poetry and the final artwork.
Although her calligraphic style is based on the Carolingian alphabet from the 8th century, and her paste paper process is adapted from a 17th century decorated paper technique, her work has a distinctly modern appeal.
