Thrush by Kevin O’Connor

Kevin O’Connor is in the MFA program at Old Dominion University. He has published poetry in many journals, including Slant, Anderbo, The Fourth River, Bayou, Bluestem, Literary Juice, The Tulane Review, andThe Pinch. In 2013, he won the Pocataligo Poetry Prize and was nominated for the Pushcart.
He lives in Norfolk with his hyper-energetic cat Walt. In his spare time he enjoys reading, roasting coffee, playing guitar, and traveling. His favorite two cities in the world are New York and Buenos Aires. He especially likes eating medialunas and drinking café con leche!

This is a Blue Bird, not a Varied Thrush that is in the photo. Yes, Bluebirds are members of the Thrush family, yet the words describe a Varied Thrush and oh that incredibly haunting “shrill call.” I love the poem – the homage to an interesting bird!

Agreed. And it’s clear you know your birds, Lindy. 😉 We didn’t have permission for a photo of a Varied Thrush so we went with the bluebird instead. At least we kept it all in the family. 🙂 We’re pleased you enjoyed Kevin’s poem – we did too.

Thanks for the explanation! Let me know next time ~ I have taken photos of many birds, including the varied thrush which are resident in my yard. LL
